15 mm moisture resistant MDF in the 3050 x 1220 mm sheet. The cabinet carcass thickness in the length that runs floor to ceiling without a joint.
What the extra length is for
15 mm is the working thickness for kitchen and bathroom carcasses on a lot of jobs. It takes a confirmat or a dowel cleanly, it does not deflect over a normal shelf span, and it keeps the internal dimension generous where the run is tight. In the longer sheet, that carcass thickness reaches all the way up.
The jobs it suits: full height utility and larder units, tall bathroom storage beside a shower, floor to ceiling wardrobe gables, and boxed columns around a soil stack that need to be solid enough to hang a hand basin bracket off. In each case the panel is one piece from floor to ceiling, so there is no joint line to fill, no seam that opens as the room heats and cools, and no cross joint sitting in the splash zone.
Where the run is under 2440 mm, the 2440 x 1220 mm sheet is the cheaper board for the same work.
Weight and handling
A full sheet comes in at roughly 42 kg. That is a two person lift and it does not become a one person lift just because it is only 15 mm. Take it on edge, keep it vertical through doorways, and cut it down before you try to work with it.
Machine it with a sharp fine tooth blade and support the offcut. The face is dense enough to chip if the panel drops away at the end of a cut, and a chipped edge on a visible carcass side is not something filler hides well.
Fixings and sealing
Pre-drill and countersink anything within 50 mm of an edge. The core is dense but it will still split if a screw is driven straight into an end grain edge, and a split in a carcass side is a scrap panel.
Use stainless or properly plated fixings and hardware in a wet room. Ordinary bright zinc will corrode in a bathroom within a season and bleed rust through the paint around every screw head.
Seal all cut edges before installation, including the bottom edge and any service cut outs, then prime the face and edges with an MDF primer and finish with a moisture tolerant topcoat. For the full range and how the grades differ, see the Moisture Resistant MDF page.
