Fire Retardant HD MDF Sheet
Fire Retardant HD MDF is the panel you specify when the fire rating is non-negotiable. You get all the workability of high-density MDF, the same flat sanded face that paints cleanly and the same predictable machined edges, in a panel rated to delay combustion and limit flame spread when it matters. At 6 mm, we stock the lighter fire-rated sheet for panelling, wall linings, signage and routed detail in rated assemblies in our yard in Dublin, ready for fast delivery anywhere in Ireland.
Why Fire Retardant MDF?
This is a high-quality fire retardant MDF (L-MDF FR per EN 622-5) with a hard, fine and smoothly sanded surface. The panel is coloured red in the mass for easy identification on site or during a spec inspection, so there’s no second-guessing whether the panel that just went into the wall is actually the rated one.
The panel carries the Euro Class B fire reaction classification under EN 13501-1, the highest fire reaction class a wood-based panel can practically achieve. In plain terms: it’s hardly flammable, takes significantly longer to combust than a standard panel, and does not contribute to flame spread once it’s burning.
On indoor air quality, it carries the E1 low-formaldehyde classification and meets the requirements of the California Air Resource Board (CARB Phase 2) and the EPA’s Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA Title VI), the two strictest formaldehyde standards in the world. And it’s a quietly sustainable product: 89% renewable materials, made from 100% recovered wood. FSC and PEFC certified stock is available on request, subject to stock certification at the time of order.
Used widely in commercial fit-out, hotels, schools, hospitals, escape routes, stairwells, and any non-load-bearing dry-condition application where the fire spec is part of the building consent.
Working with the sheet
At 6 mm, this is the lighter sheet for back panels, wall linings, panelling, and routed detail in fire-rated assemblies. Use a sharp TCT blade with a high tooth count for clean cross-cuts, and pre-drill before screwing close to an edge to prevent splitting the core.
MDF dust is fine and should be cut with extraction or outdoors. Wear a P2 or P3 mask. Keep sheets flat and dry until installation, because if they get wet the core swells permanently. For wet rooms, bathrooms, or any humid environment, our Moisture Resistant MDF range is the appropriate panel instead.
Finishing
FR MDF takes finish as cleanly as Standard MDF. Most of our customers prime the face with a dedicated MDF primer before topcoating, because the edges absorb finish faster than the face. Two coats of MDF primer, sanded between, then any topcoat in the sheen you want. For fire-rated assemblies, check that any decorative finish or laminate you bond to the face is compatible with the overall fire spec, since heavy combustible coatings can degrade the panel’s classification. Ask us if you’re unsure which finish to pair with your application, and we’ll point you to what works.
