12 mm fire retardant MDF 3050×1220 mm is the sheet most commercial wall linings come off. It is the general purpose lining thickness in the length that clears a storey.
Corridors, stairwells and escape routes are where this board earns its place, because those are the spaces where the rating is mandatory and where a long flush surface is most exposed to the eye. A 3050 mm panel takes a 2.7 m wall from skirting to ceiling with trim to spare, so the only joints are the vertical ones you planned. The panel is red through the mass for identification and classified B-s2,d0 under EN 13501-1, which reads as a board that is slow to catch, gives off a limited amount of smoke if it does, and drops nothing burning while it burns.
Cutting and handling
Two people is sensible at this length even though 34.8 kg on its own does not demand it, because the awkwardness does. Support the sheet across its full length to cut and use a sharp blade with plenty of teeth. Rip slowly; a long cut in a dense board gives the panel time to move if it is not properly held, and a wandering rip on a lining panel shows up as a tapering joint the whole way up the wall. Extraction and a P2 or P3 mask, as with any MDF.
Fixing and painting
Set out the vertical joints before you fix anything, because a joint landing 200 mm from a corner looks like an accident and cannot be moved afterwards. Screw through the face into battens or studs and pilot near edges. Two coats of MDF primer sanded between, edges included, and check any laminate or decorative film against the fire spec before bonding it on, since the classification belongs to the assembly and not just to the panel.
Where not to use it
Dry conditions and non load bearing only, and it is a reaction to fire board rather than a fire resisting one, which is a distinction worth settling with the spec before you order. Where the wall is under 2440 mm high, the standard sheet does the same job for less. Everything in the range is on the fire retardant MDF page and the wider MDF page.
