18 mm fire retardant MDF 3050×1220 mm is the most useful board in this range for joinery rather than lining. It is the standard cabinet thickness in a sheet long enough for full height work.
Floor to ceiling wardrobe gables, tall riser door panels, library shelving uprights and full height rated joinery all come off this sheet in one piece. At 18 mm the panel is classified B-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1, the strictest tier of Euroclass B, meaning very low smoke and no flaming droplets, and it also meets ASTM E84 Class 1. Those are the numbers a fire consultant will ask for on a hotel or hospital fit out.
Cutting and handling
At 52.2 kg across three metres it is a proper two person sheet and it needs a planned route, particularly through a stairwell. Support it fully before cutting and use a TCT blade with 60 teeth or more. Take the long rips before the cross cuts so the sheet stays manageable as it reduces. Expect the density to blunt a blade faster than standard MDF would, and keep a second one to hand. Extraction and a P2 or P3 mask throughout.
Fixing and painting
Confirmat screws into glued butt joints give the strongest unit, and at this thickness they seat properly in the edge. Pre drill everything within 25 mm of an edge. Prime faces and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, two coats sanded between. On a tall gable, prime both faces so the panel does not cup once it is standing in a warm room. A three metre panel that cups even slightly will not close a door properly.
Where not to use it
Non load bearing and dry use only, and keep the sheets flat and dry until they go in. Where the component fits inside 2440 mm, the standard sheet is the sensible buy. If the piece has to span or carry more, look at the thicker boards on the fire retardant MDF page, or the rest of the range on the MDF page.
