15 mm moisture resistant MDF in the standard 2440 x 1220 mm sheet. A carcassing thickness for damp rooms where the heavier board is more than the job needs.
What this board is for
Vanity unit carcasses, bathroom and utility cabinet sides, doors and drawer boxes, and fitted furniture in rooms that go through daily humidity. It carries a door at full size, takes drawer runners properly and holds a shelf across a normal cabinet width without complaint.
Where it earns its place is on jobs with a lot of carcassing. Across a run of bathroom or utility furniture, this thickness noticeably reduces the weight going up the stairs and gives back a little internal depth in every cabinet, without the finished job feeling lightly built. In a small bathroom, where every cabinet is fighting for space against a pipe run, that internal depth is worth having.
Hardware and fixings
It takes standard cabinet hardware without adaptation. Hinges seat correctly, drawer runners fix as intended and shelf supports have enough material to bear on, so nothing about the build has to change from a dry room specification.
The fixings themselves do have to change. Use stainless or properly plated screws, hinges and runners throughout. Bright zinc and mild steel corrode in a bathroom, and the first sign is a rust bloom bleeding through the paint around every fixing. It adds very little to the cost and it is the difference between joinery that still looks right in five years and joinery that needs repainting in two.
Edges, cutting and finishing
Seal or lip every cut edge before installation, and pay particular attention to the bottom edge of anything standing on a floor that gets mopped. That edge sits in the one place water reliably reaches, and it is where a carcass will fail first if it is left bare.
Use a sharp fine tooth blade, support the offcut, pilot drill before screwing near an edge and use coarse threaded MDF screws. For joints carrying real load, use dowels, biscuits or a mechanical fitting rather than relying on the fibre to hold a thread.
