25 mm moisture resistant MDF in the standard 2440 x 1220 mm sheet. A worktop weight green board for damp rooms, where the surface has to look and feel solid as well as stay flat.
What this board is for
Vanity and washroom counter tops, kitchen and utility worktops that will be laminated or covered with a solid surface, reception and counter fronts in humid public buildings, thick window boards, and shelving carrying real load in plant rooms and stores.
At this weight the board is normally the substrate rather than the finished face. It is covered with laminate, a solid surface, tiling or a heavy paint system, and its job is to be flat, stable and dimensionally reliable underneath whatever goes on top. A covering only stays looking right if the board beneath it has not moved.
Substrate work and the covering
When this board is a substrate, the failure you are designing against is the covering lifting or cracking rather than the board itself failing. That means two things.
First, the board has to be sealed on the underside and edges even though nobody will ever see them. An unsealed underside takes up moisture from the room while the sealed top face does not, and a panel that absorbs unevenly will cup. Seal both faces and all edges and it stays flat.
Second, use a flexible adhesive for tiling or laminate rather than a rigid cement based one. MR MDF still moves fractionally with humidity, and a rigid bond over a moving substrate transfers that movement straight into the covering.
Cutting, fixing and handling
Use a sharp fine tooth blade and support the sheet on both sides of every cut. A full sheet weighs roughly 56 kg, so this is a two person board and a trolley job over any distance.
Screws hold well at this thickness, though pilot drilling near an edge is still sensible. Use stainless or properly plated fixings throughout, because bright zinc corrodes in a damp room and bleeds rust through the finish.
