9 mm fire retardant MDF is the first thickness in the range that holds its own shape between fixings. That is what makes it the lining board for battened walls, duct casings and ceiling panels in rated assemblies.
Like the rest of the range it is dyed red through the mass, so there is never any doubt on site about which sheets are rated and which are ordinary MDF sitting in the same pile. It is classified Euroclass B under EN 13501-1, meaning it is slow to catch and adds almost nothing to a spreading fire, and the letters quoted beside the class describe how much smoke comes off and whether burning pieces drop: s1 is very little smoke, d0 none falling at all. It also carries E1, CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI for formaldehyde, which is what gets it through a specification for a school or a hospital corridor.
Cutting and handling
At 20.9 kg one person can manage a sheet comfortably. Cut with a sharp fine toothed blade and support the panel along the line rather than at the ends, since a thin sheet will drop into the cut and pinch. Fire retardant MDF is denser than standard board and will dull a blade faster. Extraction or outdoors, and a P2 or P3 mask every time.
Fixing and painting
Fixed to battens at normal centres a 9 mm sheet stays flat instead of dishing between them, which is what makes the finished lining look built rather than tacked up. Screw through the face and pilot near edges. Prime the edges as well as the faces, because a cut MDF edge drinks primer and will otherwise read as a different sheen along every joint.
Where not to use it
Non load bearing and dry conditions only. Keep the sheets flat and dry before they go up, because a wetted core swells and does not come back. If the lining is going to be knocked or carry fixings, 18 mm is the safer thickness. The same board in a longer sheet is the 3050 mm panel. The rest of the thicknesses are on the fire retardant MDF page, alongside the wider MDF range.
