3 mm MDF is the thinnest board we carry. Most of it goes into the back of a cabinet: the panel sits in a rebate or slides down a groove, and since the unit itself is carrying the weight, all the back has to do is close the box and keep it square. Glue and pin it the whole way round rather than tacking it in a few places and a tall wardrobe will stop twisting out of square. Drawer bottoms work the same way, captive in a groove on all four sides, so the panel never has to hold a fixing at all.
It is also the sheet most workshops keep for templates and jigs, because it cuts accurately, stays flat, and costs little enough that you can make a fresh one for the next job rather than finding room to keep the old one. And unlike the thicker boards it bends: a dry sheet follows a gentle curve as it comes, and two laminated over a former will go round something a good deal tighter, which is how curved bar fronts, column casings and radiused bulkheads get their face.
Cutting and handling
At 6.4 kg a full sheet is light enough to carry, get into a car and cut on your own. It does crease, though, so take it on edge or fully supported, because a crease shows through paint afterwards and sanding will not remove it. Cut it with a fine tooth blade and keep the offcut supported, or the last few inches will break rather than cut and the break runs into the good side. For a straight template edge a knife and a straightedge will often give you a cleaner line than the saw, and quicker.
Fixing and painting
Fix it with pins, staples and glue. There is nothing at 3 mm for a screw head to pull against, so either it sits captive in a groove or it gets pinned. Prime it with a dedicated MDF primer before you paint, because the face is absorbent and water based paint straight onto bare board raises the fibres, which leaves you cutting it back and starting again.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
