6 mm MDF is the thinnest board that spans between battens without waving. That is what puts it on wall panelling, boxing in pipework and lining out a fitted cupboard: at roughly 400 mm centres the panel stays flat under a hand, where a thinner sheet telegraphs every gap behind it. Run a straightedge over the battens and pack the low ones first, because a hollow behind the panel shows the moment light crosses it.
Most of what leaves here in 6 mm goes into applied panelling detail. Strips ripped from one sheet and glued onto a flat wall give you the whole shaker or fluted look, and the moulding throws a shadow line without taking width off the room. Rip them all in one session against a stop, since uprights varying by a millimetre read as crooked even when the spacing is right.
Cutting and handling
At 12.9 kg a full sheet is light enough for one person to carry and cut, but it is whippy over its length, so take it on edge and lay it flat rather than leaning it against a wall, where it bows within days. Cut it with a sharp fine tooth blade and keep the offcut supported, or the last few inches break rather than cut and the break runs into the good face.
Fixing and painting
Fix it with glue and pins. There is not enough depth at 6 mm for a countersink to sit properly, and a screw in the face dimples the surface around the head, which shows through paint afterwards. Prime the face and every cut edge with a dedicated MDF primer, because an edge drinks far more finish than the face and reads as a dull stripe once the paint is on.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. It is not a shelving board either, since 6 mm sags under its own weight over a metre. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
