45 mm MDF is the heaviest board we carry and it is almost always specified rather than picked off a shelf. It arrives on a job because a designer put the section on a drawing: bar and reception counter tops, hospitality and retail fit out, museum plinths, deep window seats and benching, and painted stair treads where a substantial nosing is part of the design. What is being specified is the slab section itself, in one piece.
The depth buys three things at once. It spans further than anything else in the range with no visible deflection, it stays flat under a bonded laminate or veneer, and the exposed edge carries a heavy moulding or a deep bullnose without the cutter running out of material to work in. A build up of thinner boards imitates the depth but leaves a seam to hide along every edge.
Cutting and handling
A full sheet is 96.4 kg, so this is mechanical handling or a genuine team lift, on edge, with the route measured first. It will not go up a domestic stairs in one piece and it will not turn on a standard landing, so cut it down where it is delivered, on the flat with a track saw, stepping the depth down over two or three passes.
Fixing and painting
Profile the edge in several light passes and sand it back properly before any paint goes near it. Fixings hold anywhere in a section this deep, and an edge fixing still takes a pilot hole. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer and sand between coats, giving the profile an extra pass, because a deep painted edge on a counter is where every imperfection gets seen.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a wash up area use the moisture resistant grade instead. Store it dead flat on bearers at close centres, because at this mass a badly supported panel deforms under its own weight. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
