15 mm MDF builds the same unit as the standard 18 mm board and leaves more room inside it. Across a fitted run the saving adds up: two sides and a divider at 15 mm rather than 18 mm give back nine millimetres of internal width, which in a narrow utility or a boxed alcove is the difference between a shelf that takes the boxes and one that nearly does. It still holds a confirmat, a dowel and a hinge plate.
The other gain is weight, and it shows up when the unit has to go on a wall. A tall wardrobe or a wall hung cabinet built in 15 mm comes out about a sixth lighter than the same piece in 18 mm, which matters when two people are lifting it onto brackets on a landing.
Cutting and handling
At 32.1 kg a full sheet is a two person carry on edge, broken down on trestles rather than worked off the floor. Tape the cut line on any face that will be seen, because the fine surface chips as readily as it machines well and a chipped edge on a visible side does not fill invisibly. Cut the two sides of a unit clamped together as a pair so they match each other exactly.
Fixing and painting
Glue and confirmat is the quickest strong joint at this depth, though the screw is near the limit of what a 15 mm edge takes at full length, so drill the pilot accurately and keep the fixing back from the corner. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, doing the edges first and letting them dry before the flat, since they take a coat more than the face and a half absorbed edge drags the topcoat.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. Check the hardware before committing to it as well, because shelf pin systems are set out for an 18 mm edge. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
