30 mm MDF gives you a slab edge in one piece. The depth comes straight off the board, so there is no lipping to glue on, no pair of thinner boards laminated together to fake the section, and no glue line along the front of a counter waiting to be filled and hidden. A painted edge of this depth is what makes a reception desk, a bar counter or a floating shelf read as solid rather than as a box built to look solid.
Everything else follows from that. Island tops, deep window seats, plinths and heavy architectural detail are drawn at this depth because a shallower section looks mean beside them. The panel also spans further than most of those jobs need, so a bench carries real load with supports only at the ends and holds that line for years.
Cutting and handling
At 64.3 kg a full sheet is a two person lift on a cleared route, with a third pair of hands at a stair turn. It will not go round a standard doorway comfortably on the diagonal, so plan the cut down before the sheet comes into the room. Store it dead flat on bearers, since a slab this heavy deforms under its own mass on poor support and a bowed counter substrate cannot be rescued.
Fixing and painting
Run the edge profile in several light passes so the cutter clears the waste instead of burning it, and allow real time for sanding the profile back, because a deep painted edge at counter height shows every ripple and flat spot. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sand between coats, and give the profile an extra pass before the topcoat.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. Nothing inside a normal fitted unit needs this depth either, so put it where the edge is on show. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
