38 mm MDF is bought for stiffness rather than strength. A panel this deep resists deflection so far beyond a normal board that a counter or a shelf can run the length of a room supported only at its ends and still look dead straight along the front, which is what a drawing is asking for when it calls out this depth. Strength is not the question, because a thinner board takes the load without breaking, it simply will not stay flat while it does.
Laminating two thinner boards to the same depth does not get you there, because the glue line creeps under sustained load, so a built up top holds its line for a season and then takes a slow set that nothing will pull out. Bar counters, commercial serving tops, painted stair treads and bench tables are cut from one piece for that reason.
Cutting and handling
At 81.4 kg a full sheet is mechanical handling or three people on edge with the route measured beforehand. It will not go into a first floor room whole, so cut it down at ground level and carry manageable pieces. Cut on the flat with a track saw, stepping the depth down over two passes, since one full depth pass loads the blade, burns the cut face and wanders off the line.
Fixing and painting
Profile the exposed edge in several light passes and sand it properly, because a deep painted edge on a counter sits at eye level for anyone standing at it. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer and sand between coats, then pick a topcoat rated for the traffic the piece will see, since a bar front takes daily wear that a shelf never gets.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a wash up area use the moisture resistant grade instead. Short spans are wasted on it as well, because weight and price both climb steeply above 25 mm. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
