18 mm MDF is the thickness most joinery drawings mean when they simply say MDF. It is the shallowest board that holds a confirmat at full depth in an edge, takes a hinge cup and plate without the plate bottoming out, and accepts a 32 mm shelf pin system with material left either side of the hole. Trade hardware is designed around this depth, so a wardrobe or an alcove unit built in 18 mm goes together with fittings bought off the shelf rather than chosen to suit the board.
That is why nearly every painted fitted piece in a house comes out of it: media walls, bookcases, window seats, radiator covers and panelled walls. The core is uniform enough that a routed shaker profile comes out the same on the fortieth panel as on the first, which is what makes a run of doors look like a set.
Cutting and handling
At 38.6 kg a full sheet is a two person carry, on edge, broken down with a track saw on trestles rather than across a table saw on your own. Cut a millimetre oversize and trim to the line on anything that will be seen, and support the offcut so the panel does not drop away and chip the face.
Fixing and painting
Glue and confirmat, or glue and dowel, for the units. Pre-drill every fixing that goes into an edge and keep it back from the corner, because end grain splits without a pilot hole however dense the core is. Edges and routed profiles drink far more finish than the flat face, so prime them with a dedicated MDF primer first, let them dry, and give them a second pass before the topcoat goes near the panel.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room is a job for the moisture resistant grade even at this depth. Long shelves are the other limit, because over about 900 mm of clear span a loaded 18 mm shelf settles into a curve. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
