9 mm MDF is the first thickness where a pilot hole and a screw actually hold. On a panelled wall that decides where the sockets and switches can go, because a fixing at this depth grips the panel itself instead of needing a batten hunted out behind it, and the same for a radiator bracket or a hanging rail anywhere along the run. Drill the pilot first and a countersink sits flush without the face bulging around the head.
Anything that will get knocked wants this thickness rather than a thinner one. Deep boxing round a soil pipe, a duct casing along a hallway, the back of a wardrobe with a rail screwed to it: at 9 mm the knock does not push a dent through to the paint. The core is dense and even here, so routed cut outs come off the machine crisp rather than furry.
Cutting and handling
At 19.3 kg a full sheet is a comfortable one person lift and an easier two person carry, on edge. Store it flat and fully supported, because it is still light enough to take a set from its own weight. The teeth break out on the side they exit, so cut good face up under a hand held circular saw and face down on a table saw.
Fixing and painting
Pre-drill anything going into an edge and keep it back from the corner, because the core splits if a screw goes into end grain dry, and a split edge here is a scrap piece. Prime face and cut edges with a dedicated MDF primer and sand lightly between coats, giving exposed edges a second pass, since they absorb finish faster than the face and otherwise show as a flat band along the front.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. Nor is it a cabinet board, because the edge is too shallow for a confirmat or a hinge plate. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
