12 mm MDF is the lightest board that will build a box and have it stand up on its own. It holds a dowel and takes a pocket screw without blowing out the face, which is where a sheet stops being lining material and becomes joinery: drawer boxes, bedside and bathroom units, wardrobe internals, and shelving in a bookcase where the uprights are close together. Glue and dowel a corner at this depth and the joint ends up stronger than the board around it.
Weight is what people choose it for once they have built something in a heavier board. A drawer box in 12 mm runs on the same runners as one in 18 mm but takes noticeably less effort to pull out loaded, and a wardrobe internal at this thickness leaves room in the opening for another shelf.
Cutting and handling
At 25.7 kg a full sheet is a short one person carry and a two person lift onto a bench. Break it down on trestles rather than working off the whole panel on the floor, where the offcut cannot be supported properly. Cut the matching parts of a unit at one setting rather than measuring each one, because a box goes together square when opposite parts match each other, not when they match the drawing.
Fixing and painting
Glue and dowel, or glue and pocket screw, both hold well here. Pre-drill anything going into an edge: the core is dense but end grain splits without a pilot hole, and a split side is a scrap panel. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer and sand between coats. A routed door front exposes far more absorbent core than a flat face, so work an extra coat into the detail first.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. Keep the spans short as well, because a 12 mm shelf carrying books dips visibly somewhere around 700 mm. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
