18 mm MR MDF in the 3050 x 1220 mm sheet. The standard carcass and worktop substrate thickness, in the length that gives a full height panel with no joint. MR MDF, moisture resistant MDF and green MDF all mean this board.
What the extra length is for
18 mm MR MDF is the default board for kitchen and bathroom carcasses, vanity units, window boards, worktop substrates and anything that has to hold hardware. Most of that work fits the standard sheet. The long sheet exists for the jobs that do not.
Full height larder and utility units, tall bathroom cabinets, wardrobe gables in a room with a high ceiling, and boxed columns that run floor to ceiling all want a gable in one piece. So does a run of tall panelling with a solid substrate behind it. Joining an 18 mm carcass side is possible, but the joint has to be biscuited or dominoed and supported, it costs time on every unit, and it is a line that will eventually show through a sprayed finish.
The other use is length rather than height: a continuous worktop substrate or a long window board out of one piece, with no butt joint sitting where water collects.
Where the run is under 2440 mm, the 2440 x 1220 mm sheet is the cheaper board. If the panel needs to be wider than 1220 mm, the 3050 x 1525 mm sheet covers it.
Weight and handling
A full sheet is around 50 kg. Two people minimum, on edge, and plan the route before you pick it up. This is the sheet that gets dropped on a stair turn.
Break it down on trestles with a track saw rather than wrestling a full panel across a table saw. At this weight and length the panel drives the cut rather than the other way round.
Fixings, sealing and finishing
18 mm MR MDF holds a confirmat, a dowel and cabinet hardware properly, which is the whole reason it is the carcass default. Pre-drill anything going into an edge and use stainless or properly plated screws and hinges in a wet room, because bright zinc corrodes and bleeds rust through the paint around every fixing.
Seal all cut edges before installation, including the bottom edge of a carcass side and any cut out around a tap, waste or service run. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sand between coats, and finish with a moisture tolerant topcoat. For the full range and how the grades differ, see the Moisture Resistant MDF page.
