30 mm moisture resistant MDF in the 3050 x 1220 mm sheet. A heavy green slab in the long format, for worktops and counters where the edge itself is the detail.
What the extra length is for
At 30 mm you are buying edge depth as much as strength. A painted worktop, a reception or bar counter, a laundry bench or a bathroom vanity top at this thickness reads as a solid slab, and the exposed edge carries a bullnose, a chamfer or a shadow gap without any need for a lipping or a built up front edge. That saves a whole operation compared with laminating two thinner boards to fake the depth.
The long sheet is what lets that edge run unbroken. A counter at 3050 mm comes out of one piece, so the profile is continuous for the full length and there is no butt joint in the top surface for water to sit in. On a jointed top the seam always shows up first in the profiled edge, where any tiny misalignment is lit from the side.
It also carries genuine load over a span, so it takes shelving and benching that would need a bearer underneath in a lighter board.
Where the piece is shorter than 2440 mm, the 2440 x 1220 mm sheet is the cheaper board.
Weight and handling
A full sheet is roughly 83 kg. This is a three person lift in practice, on edge, with the route cleared and doorways measured first. It does not go up a domestic stairs comfortably in one piece, so plan to cut it down in the garage or the van rather than in the room.
Store it flat and fully supported, and never leaning. A slab this heavy takes a permanent bow in a matter of days and there is no recovering a bowed counter.
Machining, sealing and finishing
Cut it on the flat with a track saw and a sharp blade. Run any edge profile in two or three light passes so the cutter clears rather than burns, and expect to spend real time sanding the profile back, because a deep edge shows every ripple once it is painted.
Seal the profiled edge and every cut out for a sink, tap or hob before the top goes in. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sand between coats, and finish with a moisture tolerant topcoat. For the full range and how the grades differ, see the Moisture Resistant MDF page.
