22 mm fire retardant MDF is the point in the range where the board stops being a lining and starts being furniture.
Counters, reception desks, bench tops, plinths and long shelving all sit at this thickness, in the kind of public buildings where every panel in the room has to carry a rating. It is L-MDF FR to EN 622-5, coloured red through the mass for identification, and classified B-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1, which unpacks as a board that is slow to catch, gives off very little smoke, and sheds nothing burning while it does. It also carries E1, CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI on formaldehyde.
Cutting and handling
At 51.1 kg it is a genuine two person sheet and worth planning a route for before it arrives. Check your saw will clear the thickness, especially if you are cutting a bevel, because a lot of cordless circular saws will not. Feed a rip slowly and keep the riving knife in place, since a thick dense panel holds enough tension to close on the blade. Extraction and a P2 or P3 mask as always.
Fixing and painting
At 22 mm the edge is deep enough to machine as a detail rather than hide. A chamfer or a bullnose routed straight into the board comes out crisp on a panel this dense, and it takes primer and paint cleanly afterwards. Glue and screw for structure, pilot every edge fixing, and prime the machined profile at the same time as the face so the sheen matches. Give the profile an extra coat, because the cut fibres inside it drink far more than the sanded face does.
Where not to use it
It is not a load bearing board and it is not for damp rooms, however thick it is. If the top has to take water, use a moisture resistant panel and check the fire spec separately. The long sheet in this thickness is the 3050 mm board, useful where a counter front runs past 2440 mm. Everything in the range is on the fire retardant MDF page, with the rest on the MDF page.
