25 mm MDF is the shelf and worktop board here in the long sheet. It spans an alcove without a bearer, and the edge is deep enough to take a bullnose or a chamfer straight off the board, with no lipping and no pair of thinner boards laminated to fake the depth.
Length is what makes both of those worth paying for. A shelf running the full width of an alcove or a chimney breast in one piece has no joint to line up and nothing interrupting the profiled front, and on a run of library or utility shelving one long board cut into shelves gives identical fronts the whole way up. A joint in a profiled edge never hides: it is the line that opens first as the building moves, and it is lit from the side along the front. Under 2440 mm the 2440×1220 mm sheet does the same job for less.
Cutting and handling
At 67 kg it is two people at a minimum, on edge, with the route cleared first and a third pair of hands for a stair turn. Store it dead flat on bearers rather than leaning, because a sheet this heavy takes a permanent set within days and a bowed shelf is not something you pull straight by screwing it down harder. Cut on the flat with a track saw; at this weight the panel wins any argument with a table saw fence.
Fixing and painting
Run edge profiles in two or three light passes, keeping the cutter moving, because one deep pass burns the core and leaves a fuzzy edge that shows along the whole front. Pre-drill fixings into the edge and keep them back from the corner. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sand between coats, and give the profile an extra coat, because a painted edge at eye level shows every ripple.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
