38 mm MDF is a specified depth rather than a chosen one. It turns up in bar and reception counters, commercial serving tops, painted stair treads and landings, workbench tops, and shelving carrying real load on end supports only, and what the depth buys is stiffness well beyond a normal board.
The long sheet is what makes a full length piece possible. A bar front or a serving top at 3050 mm comes out in one piece, so the deep exposed edge is continuous and there is no cross joint on the working surface, which on a counter is the first thing anyone leaning on it sees, and the line that opens first as the building moves. Laminating two thinner boards to the same depth creeps under sustained load, so the depth has to come out of one board. Under 2440 mm the 2440×1220 mm sheet is the cheaper board.
Cutting and handling
At 101.8 kg this is mechanical handling or three to four people, on edge, with the route measured beforehand, and it is not going into a first floor room whole. Cut it down at ground level or in the van, taking a full depth cut in two passes, because one pass loads the blade, burns the cut face and pulls the saw off the track. Store it dead flat on bearers at close centres, since at this weight a panel deforms under its own mass if it is badly supported.
Fixing and painting
There is plenty of depth for a fixing to hold, but the edge still splits without a pilot hole, so pre-drill and keep screws back from the corner. Profile the exposed edge in several light passes and sand it properly, then prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sanding between coats, and choose a topcoat rated for the traffic the piece will take.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
