30 mm MDF is slab depth in a single board. At this depth the edge is the detail: a painted counter, a bar front, a reception desk or a floating shelf reads as solid, and the exposed edge carries a bullnose, a wide chamfer or a shadow gap straight off the board.
The length is what lets that edge run the whole piece. A counter at 3050 mm comes out unbroken, so there is no cross joint in the working surface and nothing interrupting the profile, where on a jointed top the seam shows in the profiled edge first, catching the side light along its full length. A cross joint is also the line that opens first as the building moves. The depth spans as well, so a bench or a window seat carries real load on end supports only and stays flat instead of settling into a curve. Under 2440 mm the 2440×1220 mm sheet is the cheaper board.
Cutting and handling
At 80.4 kg this is three people in practice, on edge, with the doorways measured and the route cleared beforehand. It does not go up a domestic stairs comfortably in one piece, so break it down in the garage or the van rather than in the room, cutting on the flat with a track saw and a sharp blade. Store it dead flat on bearers and never leaning, because a slab this heavy takes a permanent bow in a matter of days.
Fixing and painting
Run the edge profile in several light passes so the cutter clears rather than burns, and budget real time for sanding it back. Pre-drill any fixing that goes into the edge. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sand between coats, and give the profile an extra pass before the topcoat, because a deep painted edge at eye level shows every ripple in the light.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
