6 mm MDF is the thin lining board in the long sheet. Nearly all of it goes onto walls: panelling, boxing in a stack, facing over an old surface, backing out an alcove. That work runs floor to ceiling, and out of a standard sheet it takes a cross joint somewhere in the middle of the wall. A cross joint is the line that opens first as the building moves, and on a painted wall it reads through in raking light along its whole length.
At 3050 mm the sheet reaches the ceiling of most rooms in one piece, so a panelled wall goes up as whole panels and a boxing runs the full height with nothing across it to find later. Ripped down its length it gives full height stiles for shaker or fluted panelling, unbroken in the vertical. Under 2440 mm the 2440×1220 mm sheet does the same work for less.
Cutting and handling
The weight is not the difficulty here, the length is. Carried flat by two people a 6 mm sheet at 3050 mm flexes in the middle and creases, and a crease telegraphs through paint afterwards where sanding will not reach it, so take it on edge with someone supporting the centre. Check the cutting area before it arrives too: a sheet this long needs clear run in front of and behind the saw. Cut with a fine tooth blade and keep the offcut supported.
Fixing and painting
Fix it with adhesive and pins rather than screws, since there is no depth at 6 mm for a countersink and a screw head dimples the face. Prime the face and every cut edge with a dedicated MDF primer before you topcoat, because bare board raises its fibres under water based paint and an unprimed edge on a panelling strip dries dull enough to read as a stripe down the run.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
